Thomas Tuchel Questions Wembley Fan Atmosphere Following Comfortable Wales Victory.
The England head coach shared his regret that the Three Lions team did not get more encouragement from the Wembley spectators during their decisive triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was satisfied to see his side continue their strong performance, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the game. But, he was displeased with the energy at the iconic venue.
“With limited sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we did very well,” the coach stated. “We could have been five goals ahead at the break. We missed the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. There was no any energy back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“How much more can you give in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the squad warranted greater backing today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than leading 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a greater backing in periods where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to refocus, but that’s football and so be it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Away from risking a dispute among fans, the manager also caused a stir by omitting Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. However the decision was justified by Morgan Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” the head coach explained. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his position.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who host Belgium in a crucial World Cup qualifier on next week, take lessons from their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this friendly,” Bellamy commented. “I need to see our standing. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance gives me inspiration.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at the break after hitting a post and is a concern when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
