Major Online Disruption Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Apps
An extensive online failure has disrupted many websites and mobile apps globally, with users experiencing issues connecting to the web following issues at the online infrastructure system.
The affected apps encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-operated services like its key e-commerce website and the Ring security home security firm.
Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted as well as its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of difficulties using the HMRC site on the start of the week. Also in the UK, multiple Ring users used social media to report their doorbells were not working.
In the UK alone, reports of issues on particular applications reached the tens of thousands for every service.
The company stated that the issue started in the east coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a division that supplies crucial web backbone for numerous businesses, who rent out space on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the world’s largest cloud computing platform.
Soon after midnight (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), officials reported “increased problem frequencies and latencies” for AWS services in a region on the east coast of the US. The ripple effect seemed to disrupt platforms worldwide, and the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, also reported a surge in issues on the start of the week, with many of them located in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the outage originated.
