King Charles Formally Removes Andrew of HRH Style and Prince Title

In a decisive move, King Charles has officially removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his princely title.

These alterations were made official by publishing letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, that have been published in the UK's official public record.

The entry stated: “The king has been graciously inclined by letters patent under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to possess the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince of the realm’.”

A separate entry affirmed the removal of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, with immediate effect.

It read: “His Majesty has been pleased to direct by royal warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his secretary of state to ensure the titleholder to be removed from the peerage roll.”

Context of the Royal Action

This move follows increasing controversy over the former prince's links to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

Giuffre alleged that she was assaulted by Andrew after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Andrew has consistently strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Removing Titles

The king employed his monarchical powers—accepted rights held by the sovereign—following consultation with government advisers, rather than through parliamentary means.

Royal instruments and royal warrants are instruments of this authority, used to grant or revoke honors and styles.

Since the HRH style is granted by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.

Additional Measures and Support

Following the initial announcement, the lord chancellor was instructed to prepare the required paperwork for the title removals.

The decision also includes Andrew giving up his lease on his Windsor residence, a thirty-room royal property where he has lived for two decades.

Officials endorsed the monarch's move.

Retained Honor

In spite of the stripping of honors, it was announced that Andrew will keep his Falklands service medal, granted for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
