Courageous Train Employee Endures Life-Threatening Injuries Amid Mass Stabbing Incident on Express Train

A valiant railway staff member who intervened to save passengers during a mass knife attack on a high-speed train has suffered critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Incident

Surveillance video reportedly shows the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and another station in the county. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through compartments.

The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Emergency Reaction and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from hospital.

A witness filmed the individual waving a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was allegedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous member of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained officers,” said a senior police official.

Union Response and Appeals for Action

Rail unions were swift to commend employees and demand more measures. One labor official said he would be “requesting immediate meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available support, resources and effective procedures in place”.

Another association representative urged the rail company and government “to act quickly to examine security, to support the affected workers, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.

Driver Commended for Quick Action

The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver did not halt the service in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to access, but he continued going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” explained a association official.

Further Information

Police said they got the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One observer described initially thinking if the event was a holiday joke, but soon understood from individuals' faces that it was serious.

Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to indicate the incident was a terror-related incident and have requested the community to come forward with any further information.

Train operations on the impacted route are anticipated to experience delays until the following day, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where possible.

Anyone with details that could help the inquiry are asked to reach authorities by sending a message a designated number with a reference code.
